Below are Grooming projects I have made using Maya XGen and Houdini rendered using Pixar’s Renderman

“A Suspicious Transfer Student”


This groom was completed using Mayas XGen for the hair and Houdini for the clothing. The concept for this piece is by Hong SoonSang and the character model is by dartiste. When I first began this piece we decided that the hair in the concept would be difficult to accurately capture and went for a medium to long wavy hairstyle.

When doing the clothing for this character I made the initial clothing using marvelous designer and brought the re-topologized model into z-brush to refine and add details. Knowing I wanted to try and knit/weave the clothing together in Houdini I tried to keep the uvs as clean as possible. As a proxy material until I can complete the Houdini tool, I made a knit material using Substance Designer. I then added XGen on top to give it a softer feel. The process to make the Houdini first started with research on what the basic looping and weaving patterns for these types of fabric were. For the knit I created a basic knitting loop. I then used the loop to create a pattern allowing the loops to appear as if they were connected.

I brought the model into Houdini and used the UVs to cut the shape of each UV shell into the pattern. This then is ready to project the knitting loops to the 3d surface. I then used the initial curved loops that the base makes and created the yarn threading. I used the same method to make a cotton weave using a plain weave pattern. The clothing is still a work in progress, but below are videos and images of my progress thus far.
